Statement of MCC CEO Daniel Yohannes at the Inauguration of Benin’s Legal Information Center
It’s an honor to join you to see how the partnership between Benin and the U.S. Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation is improving your country’s justice system.
An effective justice system is essential to the rule of law and to Benin’s economic growth and prosperity. That is why Benin invested part of its MCC compact in making its justice system better.
The Legal Information Center is proof of Benin’s commitment to the rule of law. I am honored to be here to help inaugurate this place. Here, your citizens will be able to access laws, case records, court decisions, and other legal information. This center will improve transparency. It de-mystifies the law for the people of Benin.
We expect great success from the Legal Information Center. We look forward to seeing it fully staffed, with a Board of Directors to provide guidance for this new institution.
With this Legal Information Center—and new courthouses, training, and automated procedures for case management—Benin’s justice system is stronger today than five years ago when the compact started. I am proud of the role MCC played to make this possible in partnership with the people of Benin.
Let me conclude by saying that I am looking forward to learning what the Access to Financial Services program has helped bankers and entrepreneurs achieve. As someone who made a career in the private sector in banking, I am very interested in what you have to share.
What we do at MCC helps to give the private sector a better chance to succeed. I look forward to seeing how we accomplished that here in Benin.
Merci. Vive la coopération entre le Bénin et les Etats-Unis!
