MCC Releases Annual Report Highlighting Agency Model of Innovation and Accountability

For Immediate Release

May 18, 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 18, 2020 – The U.S. Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) released its Annual Report for fiscal year 2019, summarizing the agency’s progress in promoting sustainable and inclusive economic growth in developing countries around the world. The report, “MCC at 15: Empowering Innovative and Accountable Economic Growth,” highlights MCC’s transparent and data-driven approach to reducing poverty through economic growth. It also emphasizes MCC’s role in promoting U.S. economic interests in the global marketplace, while building allies and contributing to stability and prosperity.

The report provides an overview of MCC’s programs from October 1, 2018, to September 30, 2019, including MCC compacts and threshold programs in implementation and development during that time. It highlights results achieved in Georgia and Zambia, where MCC’s compacts closed during the fiscal year. The report further outlines how MCC programs are impacting the poor by:

  • Improving the sustainability and safety of the water supply in Mongolia, Sierra Leone and Zambia. For example, approximately 1.2 million Zambians will benefit over the next 20 years by MCC strengthening the water sector and contributing to health, hygiene, and safety through reduced flooding.

  • Benefitting around 170 million Georgians through educational improvements that will enable citizens to work more effectively in the sectors most needed to increase economic growth.

  • Piloting an improved process for Moroccan farmers and their families to receive individual titles to land they have been farming for generations and developing a national land governance strategy that will improve women’s access to land.

  • Strengthening the agricultural sector in Niger by improving water availability and management as well as increasing market access. The compact is expected to benefit more than 3.9 million people and will contribute to greater resilience and food security.

  • Implementing and developing new power projects in partner countries around the world that will help provide citizens with access to reliable and affordable energy, contributing to overall prosperity and efficiency.

  • Building 1,886 miles of roads in partner countries to enhance connectivity, lower transportation costs and travel times, and increase safety.

The report also showcases major initiatives and achievements that transpired over fiscal year 2019. One such landmark was the February 2019 launch of the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity initiative by the White House, which MCC joined as a key partner. MCC also made progress on its new regional authority in fiscal year 2019, working towards the first concurrent compact for regional integration—including a transport project between Benin and Niger. In addition, MCC continued to build on and leverage key partnerships over the fiscal year, creating new opportunities for private sector investment and blended finance.

The 2019 Annual Report illustrates how MCC continues to deliver impactful, cost-effective development assistance with responsible, accountable use of taxpayer resources.
