Global Water Security Event

  • Dr. Kathleen H. Hicks, Deputy Secretary of Defense: “Water security is critical to national security. At the Department of Defense we know firsthand that this is true....This is because water insecurity, including the impact of floods and droughts can create unprecedented challenges for governments…”

  • Alice Albright, Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Challenge Corporation: "To date, MCC has invested 2.8 billion in grant funding in 30 countries in the WASH and irrigation sectors; benefitting over 21 million people. This represents nearly one-fifth of MCC's overall investments since the agency was founded in 2004..."

  • Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States: "As our planet warms and weather patterns change, extreme drought is becoming increasingly common. At this moment about 99 million Americans are living in drought conditions and the start of summer is still weeks away.."

More than two billion people today lack access to safely managed drinking water, and nearly half the world’s population lacks access to safely managed sanitation services. In response to this growing challenge, Vice President Harris announced the launch of the White House Action Plan on Global Water Security, which outlines an innovative approach to advancing water security at home and abroad.

On June 1, 2022, MCC CEO Alice Albright provided remarks about how the agency contributes to the United States' efforts to promote access to safe and reliable water. To date, MCC has invested $2.8 billion in grant funding in the WASH and irrigation sector.
