Thank you. It’s great to be back in Ghana with all of you to mark the completion of your 547 million dollar compact with the U.S. Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation. As a member of MCC’s Board of Directors, I am deeply honored to celebrate this milestone with you and to share warmest greetings and congratulations from my fellow board members, including MCC’s Chief Executive Officer Daniel Yohannes.
As a board member, I have the fiduciary responsibility to make sure that MCC’s investments around the world are well-placed and well-spent in the fight against global poverty. The American people, the U.S. Congress and the countries we partner with expect nothing less than tangible results and impact from MCC’s investments. Results measure and define our progress.
That is why I am particularly pleased to stand before this completed EC1 road and join such distinguished Ghanaians to commission it. This road is proof of our partnership and our progress. This road is a result we can point to and travel on to reach our destination of poverty reduction and economic growth. This road will take farmers and other entrepreneurs to markets where they can trade and do business—key ingredients for economic growth. This road will help Ghanaian children get to school, and Ghanaian families access the community services they need.
As an integrated package, Ghana’s compact focused on creating a competitive agricultural industry, promoting rural development and building a reliable transportation network. This road we inaugurate today is part of that network. Now, it must be maintained and sustained well into the future.
Seeing firsthand the great excitement around and enthusiasm for this road confirms for me that we made a prudent and smart investment in one of Ghana’s top priorities for sustainable development. I can return home and share with the rest of MCC’s Board of Directors and the American people that our investment in Ghana has produced results that we can all be proud of, and I can say with confidence that our MCC-Ghana partnership is making a tangible difference in the lives of Ghanaians.
Tremendous thanks again for welcoming me here, and congratulations to the people of Ghana on launching the EC1!
