MCC Vice President Travels to Malawi, Zambia to Mark Compact Closeout

For Immediate Release

October 26, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 26, 2018 – Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Vice President, General Counsel and Board Secretary Jeanne Hauch will visit Malawi and Zambia next week to celebrate the accomplishments of these five-year compact programs.

Malawi

During her visit to Malawi, MCC Vice President Hauch will participate in the official closeout ceremony with Malawi President Peter Mutharika to highlight compact accomplishments, visit project sites, and meet with local beneficiaries.

MCC partnered with the Government of Malawi to establish the foundation for a modern power system to catalyze economic growth. This single-sector program was designed to increase individual and business incomes and reduce poverty by improving the availability, reliability and quality of the power supply, expanding access to power, reducing the cost of doing business, and revitalizing Malawi’s power sector.

MCC’s investment in Malawi established a foundation on which the Government of Malawi, private sector investors, and regional partners now have an opportunity to build a brighter future for Malawi.

Zambia

During her visit to Zambia, MCC Vice President Hauch will participate in official closeout events, meet with President Edgar Lungu, and visit project sites and beneficiaries.

The MCC Zambia Compact worked to reduce poverty and boost economic growth by improving the water supply, sanitation and drainage infrastructure in Lusaka, the rapidly urbanizing capital. The compact also supported the government’s ongoing water sector reform efforts by strengthening partner institutions and facilitating potential private sector investment opportunities.

MCC’s investment in Zambia has created opportunities and improved the lives of Zambians living in Lusaka. The lasting impact of the MCC Zambia compact is reduced flooding as a result of improved drainage infrastructure, increased access to water supply and sanitation as a result of improved water and sanitation infrastructure, and improved provision of services from the Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company and the Lusaka City Council.
