RSS Feeds

What Is RSS?

RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication, a method for easily distributing information to users automatically from a web site. Information delivered through this method is called a ‘feed.’ Feeds are collected, organized, formatted and read using an RSS reader.

What Is an RSS Reader?

An RSS reader is a small software program that collects, formats, and displays RSS feeds from web sites with feeds available. It allows for quick scanning of content from multiple web sites in one location.

Finding an RSS Reader

Most current-version web browsers—like Firefox, Safari, and Chrome—have built-in RSS readers. Otherwise, to view an RSS feed, you will need a small software program called an RSS reader.

Using an RSS Reader

After choosing your RSS reader (and, if necessary, downloading and installing it), follow these directions:
  • Click on the link, XML indicator, or RSS icon ()near the feed.
  • Copy the link (or URL) in the location field of your browser.
  • Paste the URL into the ‘Add New Channel’ section of the reader. The RSS feed will begin to display and provide regular updates.
Note: the process for adding new feeds in an RSS reader may vary slightly. Follow your reader’s specific directions for best results.
