Nelson Mandela forever changed South Africa when he walked out of his prison cell after 27 years, proving that justice can prevail over oppression. He changed the world when he won a historic election for president, proving that peace can prevail over violence. He taught us the power of democracy, the value of humility and the strength of optimism and courage.
Mr. Mandela was one of my personal heroes and served as a role model for people across the world. On behalf of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, I extend my deepest sympathies to the Mandela family, the South African people and all those for whom Mr. Mandela was a source of inspiration and hope.
