Statement from MCC CEO Daniel Yohannes on President Obama's State of the Union Address

For Immediate Release

January 26, 2011

Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Chief Executive Officer Daniel W. Yohannes released the following statement this evening after President Barack Obama delivered his annual State of the Union address:

"President Obama’s State of the Union address this evening highlighted his vision for ‘winning the future’ by enhancing our international competitiveness and strengthening the American economy.

"The mission of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) is to reduce poverty through economic growth.  Over the last seven years, we have worked with developing nations to put them on the road to self-sufficiency, while rooting out corruption and holding them accountable for results.  Our goal is not only to help poor countries rise out of poverty, but also to create stable trading and investment partners for the United States, which will strengthen the American economy and keep our nation more secure.

"As the President stated tonight, Democrats and Republicans must work together to advance American interests abroad.  MCC has incorporated the best ideas from both sides of the aisle since its creation, to ensure that American taxpayers are getting a strong return on their development investments.

"We look forward to ‘winning the future’ by partnering with the next set of emerging economies in creating a better, more stable, more prosperous world.”
