A government partnership is critical early in development to ensure there is mutual understanding for the project in order to enable post-compact sustainability. Due to timeline issues, grants agreements were signed without being fully developed. The Indonesian Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG) was established during the compact period (in 2016) and was not engaged during the development of the grant projects. There were inaccurate assumptions made around BRG’s role and interest by the Government of Indonesia (GoI) on technical designs, LIDAR mapping and capacity building provided, which affected project design and implementation. MCC should consider embedding grants into an existing government institution of facility that has longer term management and oversight.
