Measuring interim results can be helpful to understand why there are or are not results in higher level outcomes. Interim student assessment data and classroom observations became an important part of the Guatemala Education evaluation because it allowed MCC to see that teacher knowledge had, in fact, increased because of training. This was useful background to have at endline, given that impacts on student learning were not observed, possibly due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The interim evidence that teacher knowledge had increased (particularly subject matter knowledge) allows for a better understanding of why other results were not observed later in the logic chain.
